Do you feel bad that your teeth are not as white as they should be? There are many reasons behind the teeth losing their \”whiteness\”. Products available in the market:
Various mouth washes are available in the market, which are recommended to use before brushing your teeth. These are diluted whitening agents, which come in affordable prices but you have to wait long to get the desired whiteness. These products are associated with some of the big brands and prove effective on persistent use. Continuous use of the rinse actually lightens the teeth shade by 2 to 4. So these are the ideal solution for less damaged teeth, which can be cured by using only the rinses and save money and long procedures at the practitioner’s office.
These products have to be repeated after a course of therapy to retain the whiteness of your teeth always. Prolonged use of whitening agents ensures brighter smile but can also leave some side effects with it. The exposure of whitening agent to gums can cause a serious damage in the longer run.
Trays and gels or kits: There is another kind of product in the market which offers you bright teeth unsupervised. These gels and trays are handy to apply as the whitening agent to the teeth.
The tray is safe to use to avoid the exposure to the gums. The optimum time and amount of the whitening agent can do wonders for pale and tainted teeth. Most of the time, the maximum surface of the teeth comes in contact with the whitening agent. This fact is ensuring major success for these products. Poorly damaged teeth can even get their shine back using the right kind of kit. Use suitable kit for the decaying enamel.
Uneven whitening may be found if the tray does not completely cover the teeth.
Side Effects
Side effects of teeth bleaching:
Chemical burns are associated with gel bleaching. This occurs if a high-concentration oxidizing agent comes in contact with unprotected tissues; it may bleach or discolor mucous membranes. Over bleaching (clinically known as \”over white teeth\” aka \”Hyperodonto-oxidation\”) can lead to sensitive teeth.
Rebound (teeth losing the bleached effect) is also an issue, particularly with the intensive treatments (basically with the products which provide a large change in tooth color over a very short period, e.g., 1 hour). A recent study by Kugel et al. has revealed that nearly half the initial change in color provided by a thorough in-office treatment (i.e., 1 hour treatment in a dentist\’s chamber) was gone by 7 days.
Rebound happens when a large quantity of the tooth whitening has come from tooth dehydration (also a significant factor in causing sensitivity). As the tooth rehydrate, tooth color \’rebounds\’ back to its previous state from where it started. Home tooth bleaching treatments can very slightly reduce tooth enamel.
The side effects that occur most often include:
A temporary increase in tooth sensitivity Mild irritation of the soft tissues of the mouth, particularly the gums.
Tooth sensitivity is often found during early stages of the bleaching treatment. Tissue irritation most commonly occurs due to an ill-fitting mouthpiece tray rather than the tooth-bleaching agent. Both of these conditions are generally temporary and disappear within 1 to 3 days of stopping or completing treatment.
Individuals who have sensitive teeth and gums, receding gums and/or defective restorations should consult with their dentist before using a tooth whitening system. People, sensitive to hydrogen peroxide (the whitening agent) should not use a bleaching product without first consulting a dentist. Additionally, prolonged exposure to bleaching agents may harm tooth enamel. This generally happens with home remedy whitening products containing fruit acids.
Bleaching is not recommended to children under 16 because the pulp chamber or nerve of the tooth remains enlarged until this age. Tooth whitening under this condition could bother the pulp or cause it to become sensitive. Tooth whitening is also not suggested to pregnant or lactating women.
